Opened in 1973 by present owner Manuel’s father, who is now running the bar with his daughter Marta, Bar Dueñas is still a very “de toda la vida” neighbourhood tapas bar serving up really good home-style cooking at honest prices. It’s cosy, with about half a dozen tables, a small bar with stools and a few tall tables out on the side walk. The corner location has windows on either side that let in lots of natural light.
The star dish is their pork meatballs with tocino (pork lardo) served with chips. You’ll actually find a lot of nice stews here, including carrillada (pork cheeks), menudo (tripe), espinacas con garbanzos and – my favourite – pork kidneys in sherry sauce. There’s also a good selection of charcuterie and cheese, fried fish and grilled meats. Owner Manuel is happy to suggest wines and sherry to pair with your tapas and the service is personable and friendly. A great little spot just a stone’s throw from the Duchess of Alba’s palace, Casa Dueñas.
The menú del día (fixed lunchtime menu) is also excellent value and is available Monday to Friday. It’s a good idea to book a table for lunch.
